Numbers 32:1-42

Numbers 32:1-5


Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock. So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, the land that the LORD struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”

Numbers 32:1-5


Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock.


Genesis 29:32 And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, "Because the LORD has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me."


Genesis 30:11 And Leah said, "Good fortune has come!" so she called his name Gad.


Livestock H4735: From קָנָה H7069; something bought, that is, property, but only live stock ; abstractly acquisition: - cattle, flock, herd, possession, purchase, substance. H7069: A primitive root; to erect, that is, create ; by extension to procure, especially by purchase (causatively sell); by implication to own.


2 Chronicles 32:27 And Hezekiah had very great riches and honor, and he made for himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of costly vessels;32:28 storehouses also for the yield of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds.32:29 He likewise provided cities for himself, and flocks and herds in abundance, for God had given him very great possessions.


Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him,"If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."19:22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.


Matthew 6:19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,6:20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.



And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock.


Jazer H3270: From עָזַר H5826; helpful. H5826: A primitive root; to surround, that is, protect or aid: - help, succour.


Gilead H1568: Probably from גַּלְעֵד H1567; Gilad, a region East of the Jordan; also the name of three Israelites. H1567: From גַּל H1530 and עֵד H5707; heap of testimony ; Galed, a memorial cairn East of the Jordan.


Joshua 22:10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.



So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,


Some of these names are repeated in verses 34-38, and some names are changed.


“And the people of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep. And the people of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built.”

Numbers 32:34-38


Ataroth H5852: plural of H5850; Ataroth, the name (thus simply) of two places in Palestine. H5850: from H5849; a crown. H5849: a primitive root; to encircle (for attack or protection); especially to crown (literally or figuratively).


Isaiah 28:1 Ah, the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley of those overcome with wine!


Revelation 18:7 As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says,'I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.'



Dibon H1769: from H1727; pining:— Dibon, the name of three places in Palestine. H1727: a primitive root; to mope, i.e. (figuratively) pine:—sorrow.


Leviticus 26:16 then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.


Micah 6:15 You shall sow, but not reap; you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil; you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine.


Isaiah 19:8 The fishermen will mourn and lament, all who cast a hook in the Nile; and they will languish who spread nets on the water.


Jeremiah 48:18 "Come down from your glory, and sit on the parched ground, O inhabitant of Dibon! For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you; he has destroyed your strongholds.


Isaiah 15:1 An oracle concerning Moab. Because Ar of Moab is laid waste in a night, Moab is undone; because Kir of Moab is laid waste in a night, Moab is undone.15:2 He has gone up to the temple, and to Dibon, to the high places to weep; over Nebo and over Medeba Moab wails. On every head is baldness; every beard is shorn;15:3 in the streets they wear sackcloth; on the housetops and in the squares everyone wails and melts in tears.15:4 Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voice is heard as far as Jahaz; therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; his soul trembles.



Jazer H3270: from H5826; helpful; Jaazer or Jazer, a place East of the Jordan. H5826: a primitive root; to surround, i.e. protect or aid.


Isaiah 57:13 When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you! The wind will carry them all off, a breath will take them away. But he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land and shall inherit my holy mountain.


Jeremiah 48:32 More than for Jazer I weep for you, O vine of Sibmah! Your branches passed over the sea, reached to the Sea of Jazer; on your summer fruits and your grapes the destroyer has fallen.



Nimrah H5247: from the same as H5246; clear water. H5246: from an unused root meaning properly, to filtrate, i.e. be limpid (comp H5247 and H5249); and thus to spot or stain as if by dripping; a leopard (from its stripes).


Proverbs 9:16 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" And to him who lacks sense she says,9:17 "Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant."9:18 But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Heshbon H2809: the same as H2808; Cheshbon, a place East of the Jordan. H2808: from H2803; properly, contrivance; by implication, intelligence. H2803: a primitive root; properly, to plait or interpenetrate, i.e. (literally) to weave or (generally) to fabricate; figuratively, to plot or contrive (usually in a malicious sense); hence (from the mental effort) to think, regard, value, compute.


Jeremiah 48:2 the renown of Moab is no more. In Heshbon they planned disaster against her:'Come, let us cut her off from being a nation!' You also, O Madmen, shall be brought to silence; the sword shall pursue you.



Elealeh H500: from H410 and H5927; God (is) going up.


Psalm 104:29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.



Sebam H7643: probably from H1313; spice; Sebam or Sibmah, a place in Moab. H1313: from an unused root meaning to be fragrant; (compare H5561) the balsam plant:—spice.


Nebo H5015: probably of foreign derivation; Nebo, the name of a Babylonian deity, also of a mountain in Moab, and of a place in Palestine.


Beon H1194: probably a contraction of H1010; Beön, a place East of the Jordan. H1010: from H1004 and H1168 and H4583; house of Baal of (the) habitation of (apparently by transposition); or (shorter).


Deuteronomy 8:19 And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.


Jeremiah 9:13 And the LORD says: "Because they have forsaken my law that I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice or walked in accord with it,9:14 but have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them.



The land that the LORD struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.


Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.


“You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?”

Isaiah 1:3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand."


John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.



And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”


Deuteronomy 11:26 "See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse:11:27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today,11:28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known.11:31 For you are to cross over the Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you. And when you possess it and live in it,

“But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here? Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them?”

Matthew 12:48 But he replied to the man who told him,"Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"12:49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,"Here are my mother and my brothers!12:50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."


Hebrews 2:11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,


John 14:1 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.14:4 And you know the way to where I am going."14:31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.



Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them?


Hebrews 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.10:37 For,"Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay;10:38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him."



Numbers 32:8-9


“Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the LORD had given them.”

Your fathers did this,


Jeremiah 11:10 They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their fathers.


when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.


Numbers 13:17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, "Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country,


Kadesh-barnea H6947: From the same as קָדֵשׁ H6946 and an otherwise unused word (apparently compounded of a correspondent to בַּר H1251 and a derivative of נוּעַ H5128) meaning desert of a fugitive ; Kadesh of (the) Wilderness of Wandering ; Kadesh-Barnea, a place in the Desert. H6946: The same as קָדֵשׁ H6945; sanctuary ; Kadesh, a place in the Desert. H6945: From קָדַשׁ H6942; a (quasi) sacred person, that is, (technically) a (male) devotee (by prostitution) to licentious idolatry: - sodomite, unclean. H6942: A primitive root; to be (causatively make, pronounce or observe as) clean (ceremonially or morally).


Negeb H5045: From an unused root meaning to be parched ; the south (from its drought); specifically the negeb or southern district of Judah, occasionally, Egypt (as south to Palestine).


Genesis 19:28 And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.


Hill country H2022: A shortened form of הָרָר H2042; a mountain or range of hills (sometimes used figuratively). H2042: From an unused root meaning to loom up; a mountain.


Genesis 19:17 And as they brought them out, one said, "Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away."


Psalm 24:3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place?



For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land,


Eshcol H812: The same as אֶשְׁכּוֹל H811; Eshcol, the name of an Amorite, also of a valley in Palestine. H811: Probably prolonged from אֶשֶׁךְ H810; a bunch of grapes or other fruit. H810: From an unused root (probably meaning to bunch together); a testicle (as a lump): - stone.


Numbers 13:23 And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs.13:24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there.


John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.15:2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.


Isaiah 5:1 Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.5:2 He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.5:4 What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Isaiah 28:1 Ah, the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley of those overcome with wine!28:4 and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley, will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer: when someone sees it, he swallows it as soon as it is in his hand.



they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the LORD had given them.


“Therefore all hands will be feeble, and every human heart will melt.”

Isaiah 13:7




Numbers 32:10-12


“And the LORD’s anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, ‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me, none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.’”

Numbers 32:10-12


And the LORD’s anger was kindled on that day,


Psalm 102:19 that he looked down from his holy height; from heaven the LORD looked at the earth,


Psalm 14:2 The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.14:3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.



the men who came up out of Egypt,

from twenty years old and upward,

because they have not wholly followed me, none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.


Ephesians 4:20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!—4:21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,4:22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,4:23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,4:24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.



Numbers 32:13-15


“And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone. And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel! For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.””

Numbers 32:13-15


And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone.


Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.


Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.



And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel!


Hebrews 10:26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,



For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.


“but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!”

Matthew 18:6-7




Numbers 32:16-19


“Then they came near to him and said, ‘We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.’”

Numbers 32:16-19


We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,

Numbers 10:33


Joshua 5:15 And the commander of the LORD's army said to Joshua, "Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.


1 Corinthians 9:27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.


Proverbs 21:31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD.



And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.


Isaiah 1:9 If the LORD of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we should have been like Sodom, and become like Gomorrah.



We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.


Hebrews 11:15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.


Hebrews 11:40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.


Revelation 3:2 Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.




Numbers 32:20-24


“So Moses said to them, ‘If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.’”

Numbers 32:20-24


If you will do this,


  1. if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war,


Matthew 4:19 And he said to them,"Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."4:20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.


Luke 9:61 Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home."9:62 Jesus said to him,"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."


Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.



  1. and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD,


Deuteronomy 11:31 For you are to cross over the Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you. And when you possess it and live in it,


2 Kings 5:14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.


John 3:3 Jesus answered him,"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."



  1. until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD;


“The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

Exodus 14:14



  1. then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.


Hosea 5:15 I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me.


Jeremiah 13:25 This is your lot, the portion I have measured out to you, declares the Lord, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies.



But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD,


Psalm 51:4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.



and be sure your sin will find you out.


Genesis 4:7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.



and do what you have promised.


Deuteronomy 23:21 "If you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it, for the LORD your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin.



Build cities for your little ones


Nehemiah 4:6 So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.



and folds for your sheep,


Joshua 3:13 And when the soles of the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the LORD, the LORD of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap."


Psalm 33:7 He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses.


Psalm 78:70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds;




Numbers 32:25-27


“And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my LORD commands. Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead, but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my LORD orders.””

Numbers 32:25-27


Your servants will do as my LORD commands.


Psalm 119:4 You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.


Psalm 105:8 He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,



Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead,


“After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?” The LORD said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.””

“And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.””

every man who is armed for war,


Jeremiah 51:20 "You are my hammer and weapon of war: with you I break nations in pieces; with you I destroy kingdoms;


Romans 13:12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

but your servants will pass over,…before the LORD to battle,

However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.” And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the LORD has said to your servants, we will do. We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.””

If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession.


1 Kings 3:12 behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.

And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
